The All-New Jeep Compass Goes More Than the Extra Mile Beyond its Predecessor

Newly redesigned from the rugged trail up, the Jeep compact SUV blazes a trail ahead of previous Compass iterations with the all-terrain prowess we've come to expect from the "Go Anywhere, Do Anything" moniker.

The all-new "2017.5" Jeep Compass is no stranger to upgrades. Over its celebrated older 2017 Compass sibling, the new SUV shows off more than a few.

Jeep aficionados from the Fulton, NY area can look forward to a new powerhouse under the hood – a 2.4-liter inline-four MultiAir® engine, which, paired with the available six-speed manual transmission, delivers highway fuel economy at the top of its class. That's up to a sizable 31 mpg in the energetic Compass Sport and seasoned-traveler Compass Latitude trims, and 30 mpg in well-appointed Limited and the new, hardcore Jeep Compass Trailhawk®. You can even opt for a class-exclusive nine-speed auto for smooth-operating efficiency if you go 4x4 models, and a six-speed auto remains on tap for 4x2 models.

The centerpiece of the all-new Compass, however, is a new "small wide 4x4 architecture," with which the automaker dovetails off-road capability with exceptional cruising dynamics. It combines an independent suspension, a frequency damping front-and-rear strut system to elicit envy in the compact SUV segment, and the precision of electric power steering. The build means a choice of Jeep Active Drive and Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 systems, the latter with a landscape-commanding 20:1 crawl ratio. Plus, it incorporates Selec-Terrain® traction control, with a spread of trim-dependent Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud and Rock settings to make the grade through Mother Nature's wrath and happiness alike.

What's more, the new Compass from Jeep shows off gains in the safety and security features department, with more than 70 available advanced curious throughout the lineup. They range from Electronic Roll Mitigation and Stability Control systems assisted by all-speed traction management to standard Rain Brake Support that helps keep rotors performing at peak.

The compact Jeep offers its fair share of balancing civilizational accouterments, too. Select trims offer a choice of 5.0-, 7.0- or 8.4-inch touchscreen-equipped Uconnect infotainment systems, and these come complete with control at your fingertips thanks to both pinch-and-zoom capability and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support for connecting and remotely operating your smartphone.

The big deal for 2017.5 Compass remains, though, a new trim for a new iteration, and that's the Trail Rated Jeep Compass Trailhawk®. Not only does the beast charge ahead with Jeep Active Drive Low and Selec-Terrain with a Rock mode for nimble crawling. Its ride height towers, showcasing water fording capability for up to 19 inches, and a max tow capacity of 2,000 pounds means taking a trailerful in tow's possible through some of the most exacting conditions.

But these aren't all the all-new 2017 Jeep Compass has under its work belt. Eager to check one out for yourself to see how it stacks up against the 2017 Compass of earlier this year?
